Si yo tengo dinero, iré a España.
Si yo tuviera dinero, iría a España.
Si hubiera tenido dinero, habría ido a España.

The Subjunctive: Wish/El Subjuntivo: Deseo

Ojalá tengas un buen día.
Ojalá tuvieras un buen día.
Ojalá hayas tenido un buen día.
Ojalá hubieras tenido un buen día.

(English)
Grammar is not easy for foreigners always. The subjunctive is the devil in Spanish. I was confused for a long time. They are 4 types of subjunctive: presente, imperfecto, perfecto y pluscuamperfecto. They all have different meanings but look alike. It’s much easier for me to understant the differences with the same phrases in different subjunctive. For example,

1.          Ojalá tengas un buen día. (presente)
2.          Ojalá tuvieras un buen día. (imperfecto)
3.          Ojalá hayas tenido un buen día. (perfecto)
4.          Ojalá hubieras tenido un buen día. (pluscuamperfecto)

Ojalá tengas un buen día. (presente)

(English)
Scenario: Your friend tells you that he is going to the beach with a girl tomorrow. And you tells him:“ Ojalá tengas un buen día.” Because the action is possible in the present or in the future. Meaning, it is highly possible that your friend will have a good day with a girl at the beach.

(imperfecto)

(English)
Scenario: Your friend tells you that he is going to the beach with his boss for business tomorrow. And you tells him:“Ojalá tuvieras un buen día.” Because the action is impossible or difficult in the present or in the future. Meaning, it won’t be a good day at the beach with his boss for business.

(perfecto)

(English)
Scenario: Your friend tells you that he went to the beach with a girl in the morning. And you tell him, “Ojalá hayas tenido un buen día.” Because the action is little possible or not sure in the past recently. Meaning, you wish your friend was having a good day at the beach but you are not sure if he had or not.

(pluscuamperfecto)

(English)
Scenario: Your friend tells you that he went to the beach with his boss for business yesterday but it didn’t success. You tell him, “ Ojalá hubieras tenido un buen día.” Because the action is imposible in the past. Meaning, you wish your friend had had a good day but you knew he had a bad day.

Por eso

(English)
So, when you comunicate with Latinos, listen carefully. The sentences seem alike but they are not the same.

I hope to masterize the subjunctive.
