Encounter with Spanish/Encontrar con Español

A Present/Un Regalo

Malaysians don’t speak Spanish, so do the other Southeast Asians, except the Philippines, who were once conquered by the Spanish. I encountered my very first Spanish word when watching the cartoon Tom and Jerry once, Jerry was wearing a mariachi suit and saying “¡Arriba, arriba! ¡Ándale, ándale!” For years, these words often popped out in my mind although I didn’t know what it meant.

When I was studying in the university in Taiwan, the Overseas Chinese Students Association had a fair and all the members said “I love you” with the official language of their countries. I learned “Te amo” from an Argentinian. That was my second Spanish phrase.

I used to watch American TV programs a lot. I found that Latinos were the 2nd largest population in USA and they had their Latino pop stars, songs, culture etc, which were very strange to me. When I was 34, I wanted to learn a language that totally new for me. French was my first choice but I couldn’t get it at China Youth Corps (a.k.a救國團). Then, I chose Spanish class instead because of curiosity. By the end of the year, I started my Spanish class, learning from ground zero.

I’ve never been to Spain or any Hispanic country. The more I learned, the more I wanted to know about their culture. Despite of the hardship of grammar, I enjoyed the class very much. I learn Spanish out of curiosity.

Nunca he ido a España o cualquer país hispano.
