Some Customs of Malaysia/Unas Costumbres de Malasia

Malaysia is a multiracial country. There are Malay, Chinese, Indian and many aborignal races. Each has its own customs but the people is talerent. There won’t be anything happened if you don’t know the customs. So, don’t worry about it when you are travelling in Malaysia.

There are some customs en common in Malaysia. First, the Malaysians point with their right thumbs. It’s a custom from the Malay ethnic. For them, pointing with index finger is rude. You need to point with your right thumb and crench the rest of the 4 fingers.

There!" "¡Allí!"

Second, the Malay(people of the Malay ethnic), precisely the muslims, they think that left hand is dirty, is for cleaning the bottom. So, the Malays use their right hand only to shake hand, greet, present a gift and eat. Traditionally, the Malays and the Indians eat with their hands. If you don’t know how to eat with your right hand only, you can ask for a spoon and a fork.

Third, traditionally, the Malays and the Indians sit on the floor. Nowadays, almost all the houses have chairs but people, include the Chinese, sit on the floor sometimes. To the Malays, the men sit cross-legged and women sit cross-legged putting to the left.

Fourth, greeting with hand shake is common in business. Normally people greets with a smile and nods, especially the consevative races. Persons with different sex seldom shake hands. Unless the women extend their hands first.

Fifth, do not open the gifts in front of the giver.

Sixth, the muslims don’t eat pork, including food with pork fat. The indians and a lot of Chinese don’t eat beef, sometimes including milk. If there is a party for all the people in Malaysia, the food is ‘halal’ definitely and without beef.

Seventh, the Malaysians (all the people in Malaysia) are more conservative than Taiwanese generally. We don’t kiss in the public. The muslims even can’t hold hands with their girl/boyfriends in public. Few girls wear bikini, sometimes even not wearing swimsuit at the beach. Some people wear their daily outfit in a swimming pool. When we visit the governmental departments, we need to cover our knees, arms and bodies

The Way Taiwanese Says 'No'/La Manera de Rechazar de Los Taiwaneses

I’ve read an article about foreigners doing businesses with Taiwanese. The replies from the Taiwanese are very confusing because Taiwanese rejects indirectly. 2 profesors told me that Taiwanese rejects without saying ‘no’, especially to an important person.

For example, if your friend asks for help and you don’t want to help him. Generally, you will say ‘no, sorry’. But for Taiwanese, they don’t say ‘no’. They will tell their friend excuses and the excuses don’t necessary to be real: ‘I need to do my homework’, ‘my parents are coming to visit me’ etc. It’s equal to ‘no’ but they won’t tell you ‘no’. For Taiwanese, saying ‘no’ directly is impolite, especially to important persons.

When I first came to Taiwan, I rejected my Taiwanese friends as if I were in Malaysia. I simply said ‘no, sorry. I don’t want to go’. They were a bit shock. They did no expect that I said ‘no’ so directly. After some period of time, my classmates showed me how should I reject. They told me that I should give an excuse instaed of ‘no’ and ‘I’m sorry’. Moreover, ‘I’m not interested’ is not a good excuse.

Although I have been living in Taiwan for almost 20 years, sometimes I still confused if they are rejecting. Meanwhile I have trouble rejecting like a Taiwanese.

Some examples

People: ‘May I use the bathroom?’
Shopkeeper: ‘The bathroom is for the customers only. Sorry.’
(He won’t say ‘no’)

Student: ‘Can you schedule my class to other time?’
Employee: ‘Generally, there is no such service. The teachers are busy.’

To the foreigners, no is no. It’s very important to say ‘no’ or the others will be confused. And it’s very normal to say ‘no’ to anyone. It’s a polite manner to say ‘no’ directly. So, to Taiwanese, don’t be nervous to say ‘no’.

───────────────────────────

(no dirá ‘no’)

To People Who Is at A Low Ebb/Para La Gente con Depresión

To celebrate the 1st anniversary of restarting my Spanish class.

------------------------------------------------------------------

It has been a year since I restarted my Spanish class. It has been a rewarding year. The story is: after I stopped my Spanish class, my baby was born. I stayed at home taking care my baby alone most of the time. My life then was very busy and isolated. I didn’t have friends. Moreover, I received very little appreciation. Meanwhile, I was facing other problem too. I was losing my confidence and was drained physically and mentally.

I had been success in the past. I believed that I had the ability and value. But I just didn’t know how much value I had because no one appreciated. When I contacted Yolanda, my Spanish teacher, a year ago, I was at a low ebb, a very low ebb. It was a correct decision. I enjoyed my class. I received a lot appreciation from Yolanda and I felt recharged. My life became more interesting and positive. Many problems were not that important anymore. Although I still haven’t had a precise goal of my life, I feel happier and have more confidence.

To the people who are in a low ebb, I know that you are confused, you feel incompetence, you don’t know what you want or what should you do. Sometimes, even your closest person or significant other doesn’t support you nor appreciate what you have done. Maybe you could join some activities groups that you are interested. It lifts your confidence and makes you happier. Keep in touch with persons who support you. Concentrate on things that make you happy and you will find your way out.

------------------------------------------------------------------

No tenía amigos.
